What it is
-
The Queensland Reds Academy is the elite pathway development program run by Queensland Rugby Union (QRU).
-
Its goal is to identify, develop, and prepare talented young players to progress into the Queensland Reds’ Super Rugby squad, and potentially into Junior Wallabies (national age-grade) sides.
-
It offers both on‑field rugby skills development and off‑field support (strength & conditioning, athletic preparation, welfare, nutrition, life skills) to foster more well‑rounded players.
Structure / Tiers
The Academy is tiered, with different levels mostly based on age and performance. Key tiers include:
| Tier | Age / Eligibility | Purpose / Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 2 Academy | U18 (typically ages 16‑18) | For elite players in that age group. To support & add value to their club or school programmes, prepare them for U18 / Australian Schools matches, and get them ready for the next level. |
| Tier 1 Academy | U18+ (older youth) | More advanced: preparing players for entry into the Reds Super Rugby squad. Higher coaching intensity, more integration with senior players. |
There are also specialised programs, such as for female elite youth (Emerging Reds Academy for women) to develop young female talent.
Key Programs & Pathways
-
Emerging Reds Cup (ERC): A tournament for U16s across Queensland. Players trial for teams, compete, and then the best are selected for the U16 squad, which will sometimes compete in Super Rugby U16s vs other franchises.
-
TAFE at School Program: For students in Years 10‑12. Combines school and vocational training with sport coaching qualifications (e.g. Certificate II in Sport Coaching, possibly Certificate III). Runs one day per week at partner sites. Helps players gain qualifications while still in school.
-
Emerging Women’s Academy: A 10‑week program for 16‑18‑year‑old female players, giving exposure to elite training, gym, nutrition, wellbeing, etc., to help them transition into Super W or Sevens squads.
